If St. Valentine could have planned a perfect romantic getaway, he probably would have begun by booking a stay at a bed and breakfast inn. With gourmet breakfasts, elegant accommodations and plenty of historic charm, B&Bs are an ideal treat for your sweetheart.

The Holladay House, located in Orange, Virginia, is an idyllic spot for a romantic getaway. Built in 1830, this brick federal-style home is one of the two oldest standing structures in the Orange Commercial Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The inn has been restored painstakingly and is decorated with antiques. Each of the guest rooms is a romantic retreat. Some have a fireplace; others have a whirlpool tub or private patio. Fluffy robes, fine linens and luxurious bath products are among the amenities.

Breakfasts at this Virginia inn are a delight, a two-course affair served on fine china in the elegant dining room. The ingredients feature the bounty of local produce and farm-fresh eggs. In addition to the full breakfasts, the innkeepers offer coffee, tea and homemade baked goods throughout the day.

Any stay at The Holladay House is romantic, but you can add even more splendor to your bed and breakfast stay with one of the innkeepers’ add-on packages. The Cupid Package includes a bottle of locally produced wine, a freshly made dark chocolate lava cake or fresh fruit and cheese tray, and a gift certificate good for dinner at one of several area restaurants. The Aphrodite Package also includes two, one-hour in-room massages.

Orange and the surrounding area are full of interesting things to see and do. Enjoy wine tours and tasting and one of many award-winning local wineries. There are several antique shops in the area, including two within walking distance of this Virginia bed and breakfast. Hot air balloon rides are another option, and the innkeepers can help plan this unique adventure.

Montpelier, the home of President James Madison, is just three miles from inn. Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and James Monroe’s Ash-Lawn Highland are just a half-hour away, offering a unique glimpse back in time. Civil and Revolutionary War sites are other interesting options. The Journey Through Hallowed Ground, a National Register of Historic Places travel itinerary, includes 65 historic places along Virginia’s Route 15, including the Holladay House Bed and Breakfast.
